In May of this year, a machine tool cluster began operating in the Ulyanovsk region, as reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta. It already includes five enterprises, among them the Ulyanovsk Machine Tool Plant (UMTP), which resumed operations after the German-Japanese DMG MORI group exited Russia in 2022. By September 2024, the renewed enterprise produced its first CNC metalworking machine. By 2027, UMTP plans to reach serial production of up to 500 machines per year in two shifts. The focus is not only on stable supply, but also on engineering development: the plant is already designing and implementing CNC systems from various manufacturers, including domestic ones, and has also designed and launched new ergonomic control panels. "Aiming for the best global standards, the plant has launched the production of turning and milling equipment groups, characterized by high precision, rigidity, and reliability. We are becoming one of the key players in domestic machine tool building. I am confident that the cluster launched in our region will give a strong impetus to the development of machine tool building not only in the Ulyanovsk region, but throughout Russia," commented UMTP General Director Roman Bukarev. He noted that as early as December 2024, the plant assembled its first five-axis milling machining center DMU 50 under the UMTP /Ulianovsk MT brand, which is now successfully operating at one of the region’s enterprises. UMTP has been operating since 2015, but after sanctions were imposed on Russia, foreign owners left the country. In February 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin transferred the plant to temporary management by the Federal Agency for State Property Management. Operations resumed. The first machine produced at USZ had a classic layout, with a vertical spindle and a cantilever tilting rotary table. It is intended for high-precision machining of parts from various construction materials and, according to Ulyanovsk engineers, will be in demand in many industries, primarily engine and aircraft manufacturing for the MC-21 and Sukhoi Superjet 100 programs. Over the year, the plant completely overhauled its IT infrastructure to comply with Russian regulations, replaced its production management system with one based on 1C:ERP, and eliminated IT access control from unfriendly countries. Currently, using its own funds, the company is developing documentation and preparing to obtain "Russian-made product" status for its DMC 1035 and STX 510 CNC machining centers. In partnership with Moscow Polytechnic University, a full-fledged five-axis machine is being developed, and Russian-made CNC systems are being integrated into the design of STX 310 lathes. Thus, USZ has not only restored production, but has rebuilt all key business processes from scratch, implementing its own software and a quality management system based on ISO 9001:2015. The core of the company’s technical policy is to create solutions that meet import substitution objectives. Today, the plant is fully equipped with modern infrastructure: technological equipment and fixtures, control tools, and qualified personnel. Equipment is produced using a unique machine park, and proprietary software ensures maximum productivity and operational stability. In the rapidly changing industrial landscape of the country, the Ulyanovsk enterprise is becoming a support point for dozens of other factories in need of high-precision and reliable domestically produced equipment.
